Located in the heart of West Jakarta, Ayam Goreng H. Mardun Martinah stands as a revered institution for lovers of authentic Betawi cuisine, specializing in ayam goreng—traditional fried chicken made from free-range ayam kampung. Since its establishment in 1965, this legendary chicken restaurant has been delighting discerning palates with a unique culinary experience that honors local flavors and time-honored cooking methods.
When you step inside, you’re welcomed by a warm, intimate ambiance characterized by long continuous wooden tables and softly dimmed lighting that encourages a calm, focused appreciation of each dish. The atmosphere complements the heritage-rich menu—guests often settle into a quiet reverie as they savor their meal, making each visit feel like a special occasion.
The star of the menu is undoubtedly the ayam goreng, a delicate fried chicken that defies typical expectations. Unlike the crisp, heavily battered fried chicken common in other regions, here the chicken boasts a tender, almost melt-in-your-mouth texture that comes from a unique process of steaming before frying. This technique preserves the juiciness and natural flavors of the chicken, giving it a succulent softness that leaves you craving more. Paired with a signature peanut sauce and accompanied by pickles—especially the acar timun (pickled cucumber)—the dish becomes an orchestration of harmonious tastes: savory, slightly tangy, and comfortingly familiar.
Customers rave about the irresistibility of the “nasi rames” served with two pieces of this exquisite fried chicken, a combination that captures the essence of the place. Adding to this sensory delight, side dishes like bihun goreng (fried rice noodles), acar kuning, lodeh, jengkol, tahu, and tempe provide layers of flavors and textures, inviting diners to explore Betawi culinary culture more deeply.
Given the restaurant’s iconic status and devoted following, it gets very busy, especially on weekends – a testament to the undeniable quality and authenticity of the food. Early arrival is recommended to secure this sought-after chicken, which frequently sells out by noon. Beyond its food, the place holds a nostalgic charm — reflections of its longstanding history and faithful patrons blend seamlessly into the overall dining experience.
Every bite offers a vivid portrait of Jakarta’s rich culinary heritage. Ayam Goreng H. Mardun Martinah is not just a meal; it’s a heartfelt journey into the soul of Betawi cuisine, inviting you to savor tradition with every tender, flavorful morsel.
For those craving a genuine taste of Jakarta’s fried chicken legacy, Ayam Goreng H. Mardun Martinah is an unmissable culinary treasure that promises satisfaction far beyond the ordinary.

The first fried chicken place I visited in Jakarta. Maybe this is the original Betawi fried chicken concept, because this is the first time I've tasted fried chicken eaten with peanut sauce and pickles. Usually in Lampung, fried chicken is fried very well until it has a crispy texture, but for this fried chicken it is very soft, without any texture after frying. The place is very crowded, a little narrow but the dining atmosphere is very comfortable. The service is also great, the waiter here always offers to help. Recommended

They serve real ayam goreng ala betawi. Made from ayam kampung. If you plan on coming here at the weekend, better come before noon because the chicken sold out fast. Order the bihun goreng and acar kuning for extra flavor and delicacy!

Ayam Goreng Hj. Mardun Martinah is a local legend restaurant that has been covered by virtually every media and food enthusiast. The restaurant is arranged very unique with a long continuous wooden table and seats inside. The atmosphere is also unique with dim lights and quiet patrons. Ordered the chicken, they used free range delicious so the meat is lean and super delicate, fall of the bone. What's interesting is the use of spicy peanut sauce and pickles to accompany the chicken. The tofu is also really soft. A really good chicken dish and special experience in itself, a different take on traditional chicken dishes. Parking is super troublesome in this establishment, better visit here by using a motorcycle or car hailing service.
